Whether you’ve just had your first Botox, dermal fillers, or SkinPen Microneedling - or are considering trying one - understanding proper aftercare is essential. How you care for your skin after treatment can influence healing, the natural appearance of results, and their longevity.
At Makeup by Catherine Taylor, we want everyone to feel informed and confident. This guide covers key aftercare tips for different treatments, recommended skincare routines, and helpful product suggestions to keep your skin radiant and healthy. Even if you have not booked a treatment yet, reading this guide can help you prepare your skin and understand what to expect.
General Tips for All Aesthetic Treatments
No matter what procedure you have, a few universal aftercare rules apply:
Hands off the area
Avoid touching or rubbing treated areas. Even gentle pressure can irritate the skin or affect results.
Hold off on makeup
Try to avoid applying makeup for at least 24 hours.
Use sun protection
Apply SPF 30 or higher every day. Sun exposure can affect healing, and in the case of Botox, it may even shorten the lifespan of your results.
Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water helps your skin recover faster and keeps your complexion looking fresh.
Follow professional advice
Each treatment has specific aftercare instructions. Following them ensures safe, long-lasting results.
Caring for Your Skin After SkinPen Microneedling
SkinPen Microneedling is a professional treatment that stimulates collagen production, improves skin texture, and reduces the appearance of fine lines, scars, and enlarged pores. Because your skin is more sensitive after microneedling, proper care is essential
Moisturise regularly
Use gentle, hydrating creams to support skin healing.
Avoid touching or picking
Your skin may be slightly raised or have minor redness. Let it settle naturally to prevent irritation or infection.
Use gentle cleansers
Avoid scrubs, exfoliants, or strong acids for at least a week. Mild, fragrance-free cleansers are best.
Limit heat and sweating.
void saunas, hot showers, and intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours to prevent irritation.
Protect your skin from the sun
Skin is more sensitive to UV exposure after microneedling, so daily SPF 30 or higher is essential.
Caring for Your Skin After Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are a popular way to enhance natural facial contours, restore volume, and smooth lines. Aftercare is key to ensuring your results look smooth and last as long as possible
Do not touch or massage the treated area
This helps the filler settle correctly and reduces the risk of lumps or unevenness.
Use a cold compress if swelling occurs
Apply for short periods to help reduce puffiness and bruising.
Avoid heat and alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours
Both can increase swelling or bruising.
Sleep with your head elevated
This helps minimise puffiness overnight.
Be patient
Swelling and minor bruising are normal and usually settle within a few days.
Caring for Your Skin After Botox
Botox smooths lines and relaxes muscles, giving a natural, youthful appearance. Proper aftercare ensures the treatment works as intended
Stay upright for at least four hours after treatment
This helps the Botox settle into the targeted muscles.
Avoid rubbing the treated area
Rubbing can move the product and lead to uneven results.
Avoid exercise and heat for 24 hours
Heavy workouts, saunas, or sunbathing can affect the results.
Watch for changes
Results usually appear within five to fourteen days. Book a follow-up review if you have any concerns.
Please note that Botox is only available at our Holme Grange Salon in Wokingham and is performed by Dr Vishal to ensure the highest standards of safety and expertise.
Recommended Skincare Products After Treatments
The right products can make a big difference in keeping your skin healthy and maintaining results
Gentle cleansers
Use mild, non-stripping products to avoid irritation. Look for options that are free from strong fragrances and chemicals.
Hydrating serums
Serums can help maintain moisture and keep your skin plump.
Moisturisers
Choose rich but non-comedogenic creams to support healing and keep skin soft.
Sunscreen
SPF 30 or higher is essential every day, even on cloudy days. This protects against UV damage and helps prolong treatment results.
Avoid strong actives at first
Retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, or other exfoliating products should only be used after consulting your practitioner.
Maintaining Your Results Over Time
Aesthetic treatments are most effective when combined with consistent daily care.
Here is how to protect your investment in your skin:
1. Cleanse twice daily using gentle products suited to your skin type
2. Keep skin hydrated with serums and moisturisers that support your skin’s natural barrier
3. Always apply sunscreen to protect treated areas and prevent premature ageing
4. Follow your practitioner’s advice before introducing new active ingredients or treatments
5. Schedule maintenance treatments to keep results fresh and subtle
Regular care not only helps maintain treatment results but also improves your skin’s overall health and resilience.
Preparing for Your Next Treatment
Even before your next appointment, taking good care of your skin is important. Regular cleansing, hydration, and sun protection ensure your skin is in the best condition for any future treatment. Discussing your skincare routine with your practitioner allows them to tailor treatments to your skin type and goals.
